It’s really not enough to have a degree these days. Sure, coming out of college with a piece of paper that says you have the base of knowledge needed to move forward with your chosen career (and the maturity and motivation required to persevere) is a step in the right direction. But you’re going to need more than that if you want to get your foot in the door. Although you don’t yet have the experience under your belt to complement your degree, there are a number of ways in which you can utilize the ideals of creating a brand image to make yourself into the perfect candidate for hire. Here are a few simple steps to get you on your way to nailing the interview and getting the job of your dreams.
The first step is to understand how branding works. Think about some of the commercial brands you love that are wildly successful (Coca-Cola, Apple, and McDonald’s, just to name a few). What puts them at the head of the pack? Why do consumers prefer them to other brands that are probably on equal footing otherwise? For one thing, they provide a product people want. They spot trends and use them to their advantage. They are also on the cutting edge when it comes to advertising and they use a variety of tactics to reach their target audience (plus, they know who their target audience is). Finally, they listen to consumers and employ a flexible strategy to ensure they keep their demographic happy and satisfied. But how can you employ these tactics in your bid to get a job?
First, you have to have what employers want. So don’t go looking for jobs that are really beyond your means. If you don’t meet the necessary requirements, don’t waste your time applying. Always be willing to start at the bottom and get some experience so you can move up. Even a job that is not as glamorous or high-paying as you hoped for is a chance to get some experience on your resume so you can improve the brand that is you and look for something better down the line. Being realistic about your prospects can save you a lot of time and rejection, bringing you one step closer to your long-term goals.
Next, you need to think about what companies are going to be looking for now and in the future. The ability to pinpoint the needs of companies in your industry will allow you to plan a career trajectory rather than just stumbling blindly along an occupational path. Think about how technology can be integrated into your field to increase efficiency and cut costs. Become a leader in implementing processes and equipment that will revolutionize the way business is conducted. Being at the forefront of a successful movement will increase your appeal to employers and set you apart from those who are content to let others lead the way. And don’t be afraid to toot your own horn. There’s no need to get cocky, but if you’re not looking out for your best interest, who will?
Finally, be receptive to constructive criticism. When employers point out problems with your performance, take them to heart. They are giving you the opportunity to change and improve. This can be a huge boon that allows you the opportunity for future successes. By knowing your failings and working to correct them, you are strengthening your position and making yourself the best you can be. Creating a brand image centered on yourself isn’t easy, but by doing a little research, planning for the future, and listening to what others say, you can make yourself into the perfect package, an employee any company will snap up in a heartbeat.
